Welcome to White City...
White City began in 1941 when the U.S. Army constructed Camp White on 43,000 acres outside of Medford, Oregon as an army training camp for the 91st Infantry Division. Over the course of four years, 40,000 troops shipped out of Camp White and during the war years temporary housing was built for many camp support services.
After the war, Camp White was declared surplus and many buildings were sold at public auction. Little remains of Camp White except a military hospital and military barracks which were deeded to the Veterans' Administration and were reopened as a free-standing Domiciliary. The history of Camp White is amazing. From a 1500 bed hospital to a P.O.W. camp that housed many Germans, this training camp had sent over 100,000 troops fully trained and into the defense of our nation. Today the grounds house a military museum displaying wartime maps, charts, weapons and uniforms.
Educational tours are offered that focus on the local area and what was going on around the world during war time.
The area experienced a wave of urban renewal and growth during the 1990's and by 2000 saw the development of new streets and storm sewers, a new public library, a new community service center, new park spaces, and a sculpture and public arts plan. Through the dedicated efforts of the local residents who came together and formed the White City Community Improvement Association, White City is now on the map as "A Great Place to Live."
